This year again many people will be united. From June 25th to 27th, the festival will bring together AIDS activists of Solidarity for the 12th year, 200 artists involved in the fight against AIDS and discrimination. A success already assured thanks to the announced headliners: Jacques Higelin, Vanessa Paradis, Diam’s and Olivia Ruiz might well attract more people than usual. Archive, M and Shakaponk the French pop-rock revelation will also be there. For latecomers, know that the two and three-day pass are sold out. The only hope now to be part of the lucky lucky: to collect the last pass for the day. Favorites of the year 2010, renowned and promising artists… Solidays 2010 promises to be a great success.

Exhibition Vinyl, discs and covers of artists

Music lovers, stop! La Maison Rouge from February 19th to May 16 will display a collection of album covers unique long play records. Result of more than 30 years of collecting, this accumulation of arty rock items has been orchestrated by Guy Schraenen a Belgian publisher. The exhibition is a journey over the ages and styles: 20’s avant-garde, Dadaism, Futurism, Pop Art or New Realism, everything is there. We love rediscovering some records of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones or even Peter Blake, Andy Warhol, Laurie Anderson and William Burroughs. Artists have been transformed into icons.

Vinyl, discs and covers of artists, from February 19 to May 16, 2010.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm. Late opening on Thursday until 9pm.
Normal price: 7€ / Reduced price: 5€.

The Stranglers

The legendary British band The Stranglers will occur March 25th on the scene of the Bataclan. Representative of an entire generation, born when the group Sex Pistols and The Clash mark the spirits, The Stranglers through the bass playing of Jean-Jacques Burnel and Dave Greenfield keyboards. So much so that their compositions are listed in cult films like Fight Club or Snatch by Guy Ritchie. Their concert promises to be so explosive!

BB Brunes live

The new French rock scene is alive and well. The proof that the BB Brunes rock with their “candid and angry” style (Figaro 28/09/2007) produce yet new. Discovered during the first stage at club Gibus, when “Rock’n'roll Friday”, since they bind the hits like “Dis moi” or “Lalalove you. On 10th February they will perform at the Olympia. Adolescent girls are shivering in Paris already!

Intimate concert for Amy McDonald

This young folk pop-rock style Scottish singer will be at La Cigale on February 3rd for an intimate concert to celebrate the release of her new album (scheduled for March 8th). The one who after a concert by Pete Doherty wrote her 1st song, became in a few months only, a star, following the release of her 1st album « This is life » in 2007. Her concert at La Cigale looks already much anticipated.

The incredible collection of autographs at the Relais Madeleine

Paul Bogaert, general manager of the Relais Madeleine is a outsized hunter . What he hunts (or was hunting) is not an animal nor fur, but singers from the 60’s. His hunting ground was mainly the Olympia … In just a few meters from the hotel where he currently works. His trophies? More than 300 autographs, including those of Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, James Brown, Marianne Faithfull, Credence Clearwater, etc.

The French yéyé

After his first exhibition devoted to stars of British pop, Paul Bogaert displays now the French collection including all the yéyés from that time but also the best French singers such as: G Brassens, J Brel, C Aznavour. The autographs are displayed in the lobby of this charming hotel surrounded by a precious “memorabilia” vinyl records, magazines and programs, photos.

Jimi Hendrix

Great photo of Jimi. This autograph and photo was collected on 11th May (not March like stated on my book by mistake) 1967. Jimi was in Paris for the recording of a popular TV show called DIM DAM DOM (produced by Michèle Arnaud). At the time the Television was still state-controlled and pop shows were very scarce… This particular show was recorded at the Municipal Theatre of Issy-les-Moulineaux just outside Paris and the photograph with myself that is on the first page of my blog was taken then. My brother remembers that he assisted him with finding a taxi to get back to Paris as we were a little lost in these subburbs…

• 29 January – The Who perform two shows before London’s rock cognoscenti at London’s Savile Theatre. Support act is the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
• 25 March – The Who make their US début at Murray The K’s shows at the Brooklyn Fox Theatre, playing for ten consecutive days. ‘Happy Jack’ becomes their first US chart single, reaching number 24.
• 21 April – ‘Pictures Of Lily’ is released on Lambert and Stamp’s newly formed Track Records label. It reaches n° 4.
• April-May – Scandinavian tour.
• 18 June – The Who’s US concert schedule includes a definitive – and timely – performance at the Monterey Festival in California. On the return flight home Pete experiences a deeply unpleasant drug trip – and vows never to touch psychedelics again. As a result, Pete becomes attracted by the teachings of Meher Baba, an Indian Perfect Spiritual Master, which will profoundly influence his life and writing.
• 23 June – John marries childhood sweetheart Alison Wise.
• July-September – The Who support Herman’s Hermits on the Who’s first lengthy US tour.
• 23 August – Keith’s 21st birthday celebrations end in chaos at the Holiday Inn, Flint, Michigan.
• 18 September – ‘I Can See For Miles’ released in the US. It reaches number nine – the Who’s highest single chart placing in America – and 10 in the UK – a big disappointment for Pete. “To me that was the ultimate Who record yet it didn’t sell,” said Pete at the time. “I spat on the British record buyer.”

October-November – UK tour followed by brief US visit. The Who Sell Out, their third LP, released. It reaches number 13 in the UK LP charts. It fails to chart in the US.

James Brown

On this occasion James Brown had a show at the Olympia (I believe it was a one night stand) and I had the information through a friend that he was to stay at the George V Hotel. On the night of the concert I was waiting for him to arrive in front of the hotel George V and it was well after 9pm the time due for the concert to start. No one else was waiting and if I remember well I must have enquired with the hotel as to whether James Brown had arrived or not. And often the answer yes or no was exactly the opposite to the truth so that it discouraged us to wait for the artists…

So in this case I was not so sure if he had or not arrived and thought that probably by this time he would be already on stage. Nevertheless after a while a limousine stopped in front of the hotel (a common occurence in front of the George V…) and when the car door opened there was James Brown stepping out… I saluted him welcome to Paris and he took me by the arm inside the lobby. There without looking around he just sat in an armchair, asked me to do the same: and there I was chatting to a very friendly man who was supposed to be singing on stage at that very moment.

He then went to get ready and by the time he arrived on stage I think the audience were in a state of excitement, exasperation and despair… A very nice memory of an artist who took time to know his fans…
